Organisation & the Program:
A while ago we stumbled upon Profound Life (https://profoundlifetw.com/), a local in-depth cultural tour group which provides customised programs. Ours was a 2-day tour to a Tribal area located in Hualien, the eastern side of Taiwan called Kaluluan. Kaluluan is an area inhabited by several Taiwanese indigenous groups for centuries ago. The phrase “Kaluluan” is believed to be an onomatopoeia of the sound made when the pebbles are rolled and rubbed against one another by the waves.

After a brief introduction, the team has already participated in their first activity – Cutlery Crafting!
The team made their own cutlery from scratch out of bamboo logs. A scene of the division of labor came organically among the team: Sawing, Cutting, Shaping, Rinsing; and finally, they managed to enjoy the food prepared by the beloved Inas (meaning mothers, or any senior female member in the tribe) using our creation.
Up next was a very exciting Water Tracing – It required lots of teamwork as a lot of hand reaching and giving along the way for the team – making the way to where the jade-colored water is
After a challenging activity, a nice cigar will be great (isn’t it?) Tobacco smoking is an essential part of tribal life routine that goes way back and has a significant reflection on social activities’ development throughout history. Continuing the spirit of teamwork, they have succeeded in making tobacco pipes and cigars out of bamboo branches and leaves using the simplest tools: knives and fingers.
These 2 days were sure a sweet escape from the city lives’ haste and have mounted our team spirit to another level. Now the team has gone back to the field for work, carrying not only profound memories but also a piece of “breathable” Kaluluan culture in each of our palms. Thank you team !
